Francis De Groot was an infamous Irish born Australian fascist. De Groot served during WW1 as a member of the cavalry. Following his service in the war he immigrated to Australia where he became involved in the militaristic fascist organisation the New Guard which was a fiercely anti communist organisation.

The New Guard identified left wing Labour NSW premier Jack Lang to be their prime target. De Groot gained notoriety when he rode on horseback bearing a sword and cut the ribbon during the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge before Lang could. He was also a collaborator in the plan to kidnap Lang and orchestrate a militaristic coup.

De Groot died of natural causes in 1969.
